Will SI ever be available for Mac??

Postby Malavae on Fri Oct 23, 2009 10:33 pm

Given the growing market share Macs are achieving, and the fact that there are significant numbers of Mac users on various grids, will SI ever be available other than having to restart my beloved Mac as a Windows machine via Bootcamp.

Although being able to be 2 machines in one is fantastic (and somewhat convenient) - the risks involved in being a Windows machine are significantly higher in terms of bugs/malware/virii/keyloggers etc than with the Mac.

For this reason alone, I don't like to use the Windows side unless I have absolutely no alternative.

Well, I was able to run a (limited) special version of SI on a Mac, but to be honest it wasn't user friendly at all...

The only way to run SI, but generally any .NET application, on a Mac OS is to launch it trough MONO. The harder part was to handle the GUI because it requires GTK and this make the whole process a bit tricky. We are still trying to make SI full MONO compatible but I cannot give you a precise deadline. Anyway we won't give up, once that we complete our main features road map, we'll be back on this point.

P.S. I can agree with you, installing Windows and Parallers is not cheap nor desirable for a Mac user, but it's also true that the last version of Parallers has made big improvement and atm it is able to run any windows application very smoothly and easily.

just an update, after posting my answer I visited the mono project website and I noticed a good update that might help. I'll test the new version of MONO soon and I'll let you know.

If you want to test this MONO version by yourself you are welcome to: http://www.mono-project.com/news/archiv ... ep-04.html

Hopefully if you can get a good MONO version working you can also do a Linux version.

Right now I run SI in a virtual machine under Win XP, but a native Linux/Ubuntu application is always more convenient.

Hello,

I've succeeded in launching SI on my Mac with Wine and dot net 2.0 but it stops when contacting the server. I can't get beyond that point.

It's not an internet problem since IE 7 works. I've tried resetting a computer without success

Both Wine and Crossover are affected by a SSL bug that prevent SI to connect to Second Life. We are trying to find a work around.
